Thanks Mom, even now as an adult I still always wear a tank top under my shirt.
Growing up European made me more conscious of my fashion choices; especially when it came down to dressing appropriately – I’d say that’s my personal opinion, but in speaking with other “European kids” I think we’re all on the same page. There’s something about Europe and Fashion that has always collided so gracefully – is it the idea that fashion trends start in Europe, is it that people and places in Europe have such deep culture and style? How about both of the above, plus a little bit more?
One of the first things our mothers ever taught us about fashion (without even knowing it probably) was the art of layering – which they so gracefully called; dressing in onion fashion. I believe Shrek also used this reference, in the form of “Ogres are like onions, Ogres have layers”.
The power of layering is something we should all be investing our energy in; especially in climates where it’s cold in the mornings with temperatures rising by the afternoon. Layering clothing is not only practical but also very fashionable; let’s have a look.
Understanding the Basics of Layering
Define Layering in Fashion: Layering in fashion refers to the technique of wearing multiple clothing items on top of each other to create a cohesive, stylish look. This approach not only adds depth and texture to an outfit but also provides versatility, allowing for adjustments in style and comfort according to changing temperatures or occasions. Key elements of layering include combining different types of garments, such as base layers, mid-layers, and outer layers, while considering colour, texture, and proportion to achieve a balanced and flattering appearance.
Essential Layering Pieces
Base Layer: The base layer sits directly on your skin and should be the most comfortable to wear. For example, tank tops and short-sleeved t-shirts, which are usually form-fitting to ensure that the rest of your layers fit smoothly and don’t bunch.
Middle Layer(s): The middle layer is usually the piece of clothing you were aiming to wear in the first place; a dress shirt, a blouse, sweater, etc. This is the layer that adds warmth and style. The fun part here is that there can be more than one middle layer; exactly referring to the layering technique.
Top Layer: The final topping to your outfit is the outer layer which usually consists of a coat, vest, or some sort of statement piece that finishes off the outfit.
Color and Texture Coordination
Just like when building our essentials wardrobe, it is crucial to remember the importance of colour theory in layering. Although some items may not be visible underneath one another, it is still recommended to stay within a similar colour story. This will not only look better and more cohesive as you begin taking layers off, but it will also make it simpler for you when choosing the pieces for your layered outfit. Textures can be mixed and matched for visual appeal as well, as long as they remain in the same colour story.
Tips for Flattering Your Figure
Now, I hope you’ve come this far and started asking yourself; how do I layer clothing proportionately to my body shape? This is a great question and as a woman, you should be asking that; we all have different shapes and although I firmly believe in wearing what you’re most comfortable in, I am also a very firm believer that we should find styles and designs that suit our body types primarily. Here are some layering tips tailored for different body types to help you create flattering outfits:
General Layering Tips for All Body Types
- Balance: Aim for a balanced silhouette by combining fitted and loose layers.
- Proportions: Pay attention to the length of layers—longer outer layers can elongate, while shorter pieces can create a more casual look.
- Texture and Color: Mix textures and colors for visual interest, but keep it cohesive to avoid overwhelming your frame.
