“Mom’s can’t be fashionable” is one of the most irritating statements I hear, and it is completely untrue; truly. So you love fashion but you’re also a mom; balancing just about everything for your family leaves little to no YOU time, and I feel that. But, I’m here to show you that as a busy mom, you can still dress stylishly – even on minimal time and budget.
The KEY to style as a busy mom is having a versatile wardrobe that can adapt to different situations. Making sure that you curate wardrobe essentials; also known as a capsule selection of pieces; is the magical key to dressing and feeling your best as a busy mom.
The Importance of Versatility
Versatile pieces in your wardrobe are key for busy moms because we don’t have time to stand in front of our closets each morning picking, choosing, and trying on different sets of outfits. Versatile pieces make it easy to grab and go – knowing that the outfit will be both comfortable and stylish. These curated pieces will save time, and money, and simplify the daily outfit selection; how about that for a win-win-win?
Essential Wardrobe Pieces
Classic White and Classic Black T-shirt
Short-sleeved and long-sleeved white and black t-shirts are a staple item for anyone’s closet so make sure you find one that suits you best; for example, ribbed or modal materials are often most flattering and can be dressed up or worn casually. Opting for a crew, scoop, or v-neck style can be left to personal preference.
Well-fitted Jeans
A good pair of jeans is like a true gem in your closet. Denim is something that is worn by just about everyone on the planet; and can be worn with so many different styles. Depending on your comfort and body shape choose a denim cut that suits you best (skinny, straight, bootcut, etc), and stick to it. The world of fashion is always evolving in various cuts and styles, but if you stick to what works for your body best, the choice will be easy. Once you find the perfect fit, it’s a good idea to pick up a lighter/classic blue shade, as well as a darker shade. This will make it convenient to have a pair for casual events and one pair for more “business casual” events where that “nicer pair of jeans” is welcome.

A Classic Cut Blazer
If there is one piece of clothing that you want to invest in, it’s a blazer. A well-cut, classic blazer is a staple item in your closet that can be styled in so many different ways and for different occasions that it truly is worth the investment. Of course, having said that you don’t have to splurge at all. Below you’ll find some of my favourite selection of blazers with varying price points.
In terms of styling, a blazer can be worn essentially all year round; both for day-to-day errands, as well as for work or casual outings. A classic blazer will pair well with both a pair of jeans, as well as with a dress. If you’re set on choosing just one blazer, keep in mind your staple style colour scheme – a black or beige blazer is usually the safest bet.

A comfortable pair of flats
The importance of comfort without sacrificing style is a top priority for any busy mom. A comfortable pair of fashionable shoes does exist and it’s all up to personal preference in terms of what that means for you. A pair of slip-on flats or perhaps moccasin-style slides; the key to this staple is finding something that will work with the majority of your outfits and fit your sole well.

Layering Pieces; such as cardigans, sweaters, etc.
Layering has proven to be one of the most commonly used styling techniques in the world. But, there is an art to it; even in its simplest form. Think of your outfits; a white tee, your favourite pair of jeans, slides, and you want to wear that blazer but it’s a bit chilly in the morning. Here comes the layering magic; over top of that tee, slip into your favourite cardigan (which of course is in line with your closet colour story), and ta-dah, you’re all set. The art form of layering is essentially found in the lengths and colours of the pieces you are wearing.
Now, not only are these cardigans and sweaters great for layering, but they are a perfect staple item in your closet, as they too will become a versatile piece which can be styled up or down. In addition, if you live in a climate with different seasons, these pieces are completely transitional all year round. Practical and stylish.

Accessories
When it comes to accessories, it all comes down to personal preference on size, shape, and colour, but the idea is to have a go-to set that will take you from the morning drop-off to the office.
A classic coloured tote that is large enough for your essentials, the kid’s snacks, and then some will be both practical and stylish; as tote bags are never going out of style. Find one that sits comfortably on your shoulder, but can also be carried if needed. I always recommend finding one with lots of pockets, but the truth is, you can always purchase an insert separately – so find the bag that works for you.
In terms of jewelry; unless you have the motivation to change out your earrings, necklaces, and/or bracelets daily, I suggest finding a few classic pieces you don’t ever have to take off. Opting for jewelry you can shower and sleep in, as well as of course look great during the day is the key to elevating your look effortlessly.

Tips for Mixing and Matching
Now that you have your key pieces lined up, the styling can begin. Mixing and matching your pieces should be as effortless (and simple) as ever. As your closet staples are now a collection of items in your chosen colour palette and pattern, essentially everything should match and complement each other.
Personal Touch
Now that the general idea is embedded in your closet, it’s time to make it your own. It is highly encouraged to add personal touches to outfits that reflect your style. This can mean your favourite colours or patterns, or your favourite accessories for example. Choosing pieces that reflect your style will ensure that your staple pieces are both practical and enjoyable to wear.
The idea of creating and having these wardrobe essentials is to make outfit choices easier and more practical, but most importantly, to make you feel really good in what you’re wearing.
So in conclusion…
Creating a curated closet for a busy mom is an essential task for both her style and mental state. Having a happy mindset starts with a less is more mentality – we already have enough to think about, so how about letting your outfits choose themselves?
Taking time in advance to put together a collection of staple pieces will make daily outfit choices easy, and you’ll feel confident, comfortable and stylish wherever the day takes you.
